WAEC has cancelled 3,647 subject results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has invalidated the results of 3,647 candidates who brought foreign materials, including prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials, into the examination hall.

In addition, the Council has nullified the entire results of 839 candidates caught in possession of mobile phones during the examination.

Results for specific subjects from candidates in 235 schools have been withheld due to the use of Artificial Intelligence to generate answers.

Furthermore, WAEC reported that the results of 4,280 candidates’ subjects and the complete results of 1,005 candidates are being withheld due to various suspected offenses.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 18, 2023, WAEC disclosed that these results are currently under investigation. The outcomes of the investigations will determine whether the results will be released or permanently cancelled.

The statement read, “Following the conclusion of investigations into some reported irregularities during the examination, the 35th Meeting of the Ghana Examinations Committee, held on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, approved the following actions: Cancellation of Subject Results for 3,647 candidates who brought foreign materials such as prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials into the examination halls.”

“Invalidation of Entire Results for 839 candidates found in possession of mobile phones in the examination halls. Withholding of Subject Results for 4,280 candidates and the Entire Results for 1,005 candidates due to various suspected offenses. Additionally, subject results for candidates from 235 schools have been withheld for collusion and the use of artificial intelligence-generated answers,” excerpts from the statement revealed.
