The 39th National Farmers’ Day celebration is set to take place today, December 1, 2023, at the University of Mines and Technology in Tarkwa, Western Region. The event will culminate in a dinner for celebrants and awardees, with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the guest of honour.
In an interview, the Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Agriculture, Tanko Bagbara, highlighted efforts to make agriculture more attractive to the youth. The ministry is focusing on mechanized agriculture, emphasizing a move towards smart farming to reduce drudgery and make agriculture more appealing to the younger generation.
Bagbara stated, “The Ministry of Agric is ready to deploy enough resources; agriculture will be made easy for the youth.” He also mentioned plans for Ghana to generate its own fertilizer, aiming to eliminate the need for imports. The PR officer assured that the fertilizer would be affordable and accessible to Ghanaian farmers.
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture had previously announced road closures around the Ministerial enclave in Accra ahead of the National Farmers’ Day celebrations. The closure affected roads around the Ridge Roundabout, Parliament House, Independence Square, the John Evans Alta Mills Court Complex, and the National Theatre. The event, known as “Agrifest Ghana 2023,” began on November 27 and concludes today, December 1, 2023. The ministry advised individuals to seek alternative parking and routes during the affected period.
