Alexander Afenyo-Markin, a member of parliament in Ghana, has proposed reducing the number of parliamentary seats to 200. There was a lot of debate over the proposal.
According to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, reducing the number of seats would help streamline t’s parliament and improve its efficiency. Currently, there is one representative for every 125,000 people, which is bloated and inefficient.
Some lawmakers have expressed support for the proposal, while others have raised concerns about its potential impact on representation. Reduced seats may result in unequal representation for certain regions or groups within the country, according to other suggestions.
Reduced seats are argued to be cheaper and less burdensome on taxpayers by those who support the proposal. Furthermore, they point out that other countries, such as Nigeria and South Africa, have successfully reduced the size of their parliaments.
Opponents of the proposal claim that reducing the number of seats would cause a concentration of power and less diversity in parliament. A reduction in seats may also exacerbate the underrepresentation of some regions and groups in parliament.
