According to a report by the Mental Health Authority, 81 people took their own lives in Ghana during the first half of 2024, with an additional 543 suicide attempts recorded in the same period.

In a statement issued to mark the 2024 World Suicide Prevention Day, Professor Pinaman Appau, Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority, highlighted the importance of focusing on children and adolescents. “Some studies in Ghana have revealed a high prevalence of suicidal behaviors among students, which demands urgent attention,” she stated.

The Authority expressed deep concern over the rising suicide cases, particularly among young people aged 15-29, a trend seen globally.

The Greater Accra, Eastern, and Central regions saw the highest numbers of suicide attempts, while the most completed suicides were reported in the Greater Accra region.

Professor Appau underscored the importance of starting conversations about suicide to break the silence and stigma that surrounds it. “We need to begin these discussions in our homes, schools, markets, offices, and public spaces to create awareness and reduce the stigma tied to suicidal behavior,” she said.

The Mental Health Authority pointed to several factors contributing to suicidal behavior, including bullying, abuse, neglect, substance abuse, family poverty, and poor academic performance.

With suicide now decriminalized in Ghana, the Authority urged the public to remain vigilant and seek help when needed, emphasizing that support is available through the national suicide helpline.

“Call our National Suicide Help Line: 0800 678 678. Together, we can change the narrative by starting the conversation today,” Professor Appau concluded.
