According to Akandoh, 79 of these ambulances have completely broken down, while the remaining 12 have been involved in accidents, rendering them unfit for use. This disclosure was made during a debate on the budget estimates for the Ministry of Health.
Expressing concern over the insufficient funding for the National Ambulance Service, Akandoh highlighted the significant increase in cases handled by the service, citing 41,000 cases in 2022 and 27,000 cases in 2023 as of the time of the parliamentary session.
Akandoh emphasized the financial constraints faced by the National Ambulance Service, pointing out that out of an allocated GH¢67 million, only GH¢20 million had been received. He warned that if the current trend continues, with 91 ambulances out of operation, the fleet might be depleted entirely in four years.
It’s worth noting that President Nana Akufo-Addo had commissioned the ambulances on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, at the Black Star Square in Accra.
