Actress Yvonne Nelson has called on the policy think tank IMANI Africa to organize a protest against the Akufo-Addo government due to the recent recurrence of erratic power supply, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”

This call comes following recent intermittent power outages reminiscent of the severe power cuts Ghana experienced in 2015, leading to widespread frustration among citizens. Ms. Nelson, who is also a producer, previously organized a large protest against the John Mahama government over similar power supply issues.

IMANI Ghana, a prominent policy think tank, played a crucial role in the success of the 2015 protest, which saw the participation of numerous Ghanaian celebrities and highlighted the adverse effects of power cuts on daily life.

On April 17, 2024, residents in the Ashanti region organized a nighttime dumsor vigil in Kumasi, where hundreds of protesters marched against the power supply challenges, expressing their frustration with the erratic power supply and frequent unannounced blackouts.

Energy experts and citizens have criticized the government for its poor management of the situation.

Ms. Nelson took to social media on Monday, expressing her desire for IMANI to organize another vigil similar to the one in 2015, stating, “Imani Ghana, can we organize another vigil? I’ve been waiting for you to reach out like you did years back. (your team made our demo a success) I’m reaching out myself. The NPP and its leadership @NAkufoAddo have taken Ghanaians for granted. DUMSORMUSTSTOP.”
