The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) has confirmed in a press release that this morning, there was a 2.8 magnitude earth tremor in parts of the capital city of Accra. According to the authority, the tremor occurred at 9.49 am and was felt slightly in High Street, Ridge, and other areas of Accra Central. In the release signed by the Acting Director-General of GGSA, Isaac Kuuwan Mwinbelle, it was stated that the epicenter was located 1.5km offshore near James Town in the Greater Accra Region. The recorded magnitude indicates that the tremor was minor and therefore not expected to cause any damage.
The GGSA stated that occurrences such as these are natural and therefore difficult to predict. The authority also urged the public to remain calm, stating that there is no cause for alarm and that people should continue with their normal activities. The GGSA is committed to continuously monitoring these events and providing appropriate information to ensure public safety and minimize risk. Additionally, the authority is currently educating and sensitizing the public on awareness and response during earth tremors. Following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake close to the Syrian border in southern Turkey on February 6, which was followed by powerful aftershocks, news regarding earth tremors has become a popular topic.”
The region witnessed over 50,000 fatalities as buildings collapsed during the disaster. In the aftermath of the calamity, there has been a close examination of building codes and construction practices in Turkey.
