As finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has failed to deliver

Ghana’s economy has not been managed well by Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta, according to former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo.

She says he has failed to deliver on the promise made by the Akufo-Addo government to protect the public purse when it took office in 2017. As she pointed out, the purse is rather empty.

In an interview to be aired on Joy News’ Upfront, Madam Akuffo discussed the state of affairs with Raymond Acquah.

A support programme from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is urgently needed to help Ghana’s economy.

According to the retired Supreme Court judge, the Minister charged with managing the economy has fallen short of expectations in terms of performance.

Madam Akuffo, when asked if she had any fundamental concerns about how the minister handled the economy, said, “I only know that you were sworn in to protect the national coffers, but they are now empty.” She has been very disappointed with the minister’s handling of the economy.

A number of parties, including members of the NPP government, have called for the resignation of the Finance Minister. Considering that point, the former judge believes it should be up to the president to make a decision. Despite insisting that economic management has not been impressive, what has been promised has not been delivered.

There have been many areas where little has been accomplished. It would be better if someone else tried it. Some ministries will have to reconnect with their former partners as well. Several ministries that were under one ministry were divided. The Ministry of Transport includes, for example, air, land, sea, and anything else related to transportation. They were separated under various ministries, and now it’s time to merge them again. All the different ministries need their own Ministers and Deputy Ministers, which is unnecessary, not to mention the cost involved.

“The person in charge of managing the economy hasn’t done a good job, and I would feel the same if it were someone else.” She said.

It has been suggested that President Akufo-Addo reduce the size of the government and replace some ministers. It is also a concern shared by the former Chief Justice.
