Football club Besiktas has officially announced the mutual termination of defender Daniel Amartey’s contract. The decision, confirmed by both the club and the player, ends Amartey’s stint with Besiktas, a move that has surprised many fans following his career.
Amartey, 29, joined Besiktas with high expectations and showcased his defensive prowess in several key matches. However, the two sides agreed to part ways, with the reasons for the mutual termination undisclosed. Despite the sudden decision, the split appears to be amicable.
Now a free agent, Amartey is free to negotiate with other clubs without a transfer fee, opening new opportunities. His experience and talent are expected to attract interest from teams looking to bolster their defence.
Over the summer of 2024-2025, Amartey was reportedly close to joining a Saudi Arabian club but allegedly preferred a move to either Germany or England. According to Besiktas spokesman Hüseyin Yücel, “Amartey is a strange person. We had an agreement with a team from Saudi Arabia, but he refused to board the plane. We also had an agreement with Eyüpspor, but he left through the back door of our facilities. He said, ‘I will go to Germany or England.’ When told the transfer window was closed, he asked, ‘How can it close?’”
With Amartey’s departure, Besiktas will need to adjust their defensive strategies and explore new options to fill the void. Fans are eager to see how the team adapts and who will step up to play a key role in the defence.
