Col (rtd) Charles Okello Engola has been shot dead. He was Uganda’s State Minister for Labour, Employment, and Industrial Relations. His bodyguard shot and killed him, then turned the gun on himself, resulting in his death. The tragic event has caused widespread mourning throughout the eastern African country. According to reports, the incident occurred in the morning at the minister’s home in Kyanja, a suburb of Kampala, and has been confirmed by the police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigire.
The bodyguard fled to a nearby salon, where he took his own life, presumably to avoid legal consequences. The news has prompted reactions and condolences, including from Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Ms. Anita Among. The motive behind the bodyguard’s actions, which caused the minister’s death, is still unknown. An investigation has been launched into the incident.
