The University of Georgia Athletic Association released a statement stating that the Georgia Bulldogs football team has declined an invitation to visit the White House next month to celebrate their consecutive national championship victories.
The university received the invitation on May 3, but because of conflicts with the student-athlete calendar and the time of year, the suggested June 12 was unfeasible. However, the university expressed gratitude for the invitation and openness to future opportunities for Georgia teams.
In January, the Bulldogs won over the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs with a score of 65-7, securing the won Football Playoff National Championship Trophy and completing a perfect 15-0 season.
The team did not visit the White House following their championship win last year, and neither did the Alabama Crimson Tide the year before. These absences were attributed to reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last football team to visit the White House for their championship was the Louisiana State University Tigers in January 2020, during which former President Donald Trump made jokes about his first impeachment but did not provide the now-famous spread of fast food that had greeted the Clemson Tigers, the 2018 champions.
On Monday, President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden announced that the White House would host ceremonies on May 26 to celebrate the national championship titles of the LSU Tigers women’s basketball team and the University of Connecticut Huskies men’s basketball team.
The invitation extended to the LSU women’s basketball team comes after the team’s star player, Angel Reese, publicly criticized the first lady for suggesting that both LSU and the University of Iowa, the second-place team, should attend the celebratory ceremony. The first lady’s office later clarified her remarks.
