Emerging reports reveal that officials from the Office of the Special Prosecutor made significant cash discoveries during searches conducted at the private and official residences of former Sanitation and Water Resources Minister Cecilia Dapaah in Abelemkpe and Cantonments, respectively. According to a report by TV3’s Eric Mawuena Egbeta, the amount of money found was so substantial that it took the officials five hours to complete the counting process. The OSP had arrested Dapaah on allegations of corruption, and her private residences were searched before she was later released on bail.
The arrest came in response to public outcry following the disclosure in court documents that the Minister had kept large sums of money, including $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Cedis, in her house, which were stolen by her domestic staff. The two alleged culprits, Patience Botwe, 18, and Sarah Agyei, 30, were apprehended and presented before a court. They are accused of committing the theft between July and October 2022 and have been granted bail, with a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday, August 2.
This scandal has sparked anger among most Ghanaians, with demands for her prosecution. However, residents of Mpasatia in the Ashanti region, the hometown of the embattled former Minister, have expressed mixed reactions. Some residents praised the domestic workers for their actions, viewing them as brave and intelligent for bettering their lives. In contrast, others lamented the lack of development in the area and the politicians’ alleged self-enrichment at their expense. Some individuals defended Dapaah, believing she had committed no wrongdoing.
The situation remains contentious; opinions diverge on the actions of the former Minister and her domestic staff, fueling discussions and debates across the nation.
