Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in April 2023, will appear before the Appointments Committee of Parliament for vetting on May 26. Her nomination was made to prevent any leadership gap after the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, on May 24.
If approved, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, a native of Winneba in the Central Region, will become Ghana’s third female Chief Justice, following Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo. President Akufo-Addo has urged the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to expedite Torkornoo’s approval to avoid a vacuum in the Chief Justice’s office.
