The primary opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has leveled accusations against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, alleging their involvement in promoting illegal mining activities that have resulted in the destruction of water bodies across the country.
According to the NDC, the highest-ranking leaders of the nation are actively supporting and encouraging these illegal activities, which explains the lack of effective measures to curtail them.
During the October 16, 2023, segment of the “Moment of Truth” series, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, expressed the party’s deep concern and dismay over the extent to which President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia have apparently endorsed and allowed the degradation of Ghana’s environment.
Additionally, the NDC spokesperson accused the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, of shielding individuals involved in illegal mining and called for his resignation. He stated, “They have been active collaborators and promoters of the ‘galamsey trade.’ Their actions, including those of their Attorney-General, to consistently shield corrupt officials of the ruling NPP and the government, are evident. Posterity will never forgive them.”
