Social media has been excited since a photograph of Achimota School’s potential team for the upcoming National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) surfaced on June 2. Among the students in the photo, one person stood out—Tyrone Marhguy—a young man at the center of a controversy that rocked the education sector two years ago.
Tyrone was prominently featured in the social media post, showcasing Achimota School’s trial session before the 2023 NSMQ season. This announcement has captured attention for several reasons. Two years ago, Tyrone and another student raised concerns after the school denied them admission due to their hairstyle, which the school deemed a violation of its code of conduct.
The Rastafarian students took legal action against the Achimota School Board of Governors, the Minister of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and the Attorney General for refusing to enroll them. The school insisted that the students comply with its regulations by cutting their dreadlocks. On May 31, 2021, a High Court ruling directed the school to admit the students.
While Tyrone was successfully enrolled, his colleague, Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea, secured a scholarship and enrolled at Ghana International School. In June 2021, following the court ruling, Tyrone Marhguy joined Achimota School and sat for his end-of-term examination shortly after his enrollment.
With this latest development, social media users are captivated by the possibility of this narrative evolving into a ‘zero-to-hero’ story as the national quiz approaches. It is not the first time Tyrone has been associated with Achimota School’s NSMQ team, as he was also part of the team last year, which sparked discussions surrounding his
participation.
