President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has addressed the recent controversy surrounding the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) attempt to sell some of its hotel assets. The controversy erupted when SSNIT decided to offload certain hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, in response to growing public and workers’ union pressure. SSNIT had defended the sale, citing the lack of profitability of the listed hotels as a key reason.
Speaking at the Trades Union Congress’ 12th Quadrennial Congress in the Central Region, President Akufo-Addo described the uproar over SSNIT’s decision to offload its non-performing hotel assets as “unnecessary.” He emphasized that under its current management, SSNIT is generating profits from its assets, evidenced by a recent surplus of GHC 213 million. He noted that the aborted transaction was a rare instance where external investors showed interest in SSNIT assets.
The president urged workers to be cautious in making decisions and statements that could negatively impact the long-term interests of pensioners. He also called on organized labor to develop and advocate for policies that prevent job losses and increased poverty due to the rise of artificial intelligence. Additionally, he stressed the importance of promoting gender equality and inclusion by ensuring equal pay for equal work and creating favorable working environments for women with children.
