Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced a €5 million funding package from the Italian government to enhance Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ghana, aimed at addressing the country’s rising youth unemployment.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly reconstituted Ghana TVET Council in Accra, Mr. Iddrisu described the support as a crucial and timely intervention to reshape Ghana’s skills development agenda.
He indicated that formal confirmation of the Italian support is expected by the end of the week.
“We must work together to reposition technical and vocational education, not as a fallback option, but as a key driver of national development,” the Minister said. “I firmly believe that strengthening and investing in TVET is the most effective way to tackle youth unemployment.”
In addition to the Italian partnership, Mr. Iddrisu revealed that the government is committing to allocate two percent of Ghana’s national budget annually to the advancement of TVET. This strategic investment, he said, is essential for overcoming long-standing challenges within the sector.
He acknowledged persistent issues such as outdated infrastructure, weak industry linkages, and societal attitudes that view vocational education as inferior to traditional academic paths.
“We must begin to view TVET as a gateway to producing job creators, not just job seekers,” he stressed. “If we get this right, we will nurture a generation of skilled, confident entrepreneurs capable of transforming our economy.”
