The former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah discussed the sacrifices he made for his national team during his playing career with Sompa TV. Appiah, who played for Juventus, revealed that at a point, none of his teammates was interested in playing for the Black Stars. He had to pay for his teammates’ flights to Ghana. He also disclosed that he used his own money to pay for his international teammates’ winning bonuses.
Appiah expressed disappointment at the current state of football in Ghana, feeling that his sacrifices have not been appreciated enough. He hopes that one day, an ex-footballer will lead the administration of the sport in Ghana, stating that they do not give legends and former players a chance to be involved in football administration. While he himself is not necessarily the person for the job, he hopes someone will step up and everyone will support them.
Appiah retired from football in 2012, having served as Ghana’s captain when the country qualified for its first-ever FIFA World Cup in Germany in 2006.
