In an unexpected twist, road transport operators and drivers are currently at a standstill as the promised 10 percent fare reduction, announced earlier this week, needs to materialize.
During an interview with Citi Business News, the transport operators appealed to the public, requesting them to continue paying the existing fares until their leadership convened to determine the following action.
The expected fare reduction, initially scheduled for Wednesday, May 17, 2023, relieved public transport users.
The announcement was made in response to gradual decreases in fuel prices, allowing operators to pass on some savings to commuters.
Addressing the situation, Abass Imoro, the Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), stated, “There was an issue that arose with the 10% reduction, so we have called for a temporary halt. We kindly request the public to continue paying the previous fares until our leadership meets on Monday to discuss the way forward.”
