Kagame plans to practice journalism after retiring

During a joint press briefing with Kenyan counterpart William Ruto in Kigali, Rwandan President Paul Kagame revealed his ruling party is developing a plan for his retirement and succession, despite previously suggesting he would contest the 2024 election in an interview with a French TV channel.

Kagame, who has been in office for 22 years, explained that although selecting his successor is not his current priority, he wants to ensure that whoever takes over from him can continue his work seamlessly.

He said the party has been discussing this topic since 2010. Kagame’s comments came after the Rwandan Patriotic Front elected its first female vice-chairperson while Kagame kept his chairmanship.

Kagame has been leading the party since 1998. He also stated he would pursue journalism after retiring from office.
