The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to nominate James Gyakye Quayson as its candidate for the upcoming Assin North by-election. Despite the Supreme Court revoking his mandate, the NDC insists Mr. Quayson will remain their candidate. Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, dismissed rumors of a replacement candidate during an interview on Accra-based Citi FM.
Gbande stated, “While the party has a plan, we want to assure the public that the NDC is fully prepared for the by-election. We know the government intends to challenge us, but we are already on the ground, and our preparations are underway. The NDC is ready for the Assin North by-election. We believe the government has denied the people of Assin North their proper representation in Parliament through judicial means. It is concerning that the Supreme Court has yet to deliver a written judgment to the parties involved.”
He continued, “In light of this, our focus is to merge our support on the ground and strengthen what we have already established. We have made it clear James Gyakye Quayson, a credible candidate who is to merge by his constituents, remains our choice. This decision has not changed. Claims from the NPP suggesting we are abandoning him are mere propaganda aimed at tarnishing our candidate’s integrity. The NDC has made no such announcement. Mr. Quayson is eligible to participate in the election and is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Why is the NPP more concerned about this than us?”
Gbande also highlighted the NDC’s intention to closely monitor the NPP for vote-buying. They will promptly report any incidents to the police and urge them to take immediate action.
“Considering the government has previously engaged in vote-buying, we will remain vigilant and keep the Ghana Police informed about such activities. When we report cases of vote-buying, we expect the police to respond promptly and not treat it as routine. It is crucial to establish a level playing field. By doing so, we are confident that the NDC will emerge victorious in this election,” Gbande expressed optimistically.
On May 30, Parliament declared the Assin North Parliamentary seat vacant following the Supreme Court’s ruling on James Gyakye Quayson’s eligibility to hold the seat.
