A major fire outbreak at Accra Water Works has destroyed 32 rooms at the Accra Central Police Barracks Annex and left one firefighter seriously injured after emergency crews battled the inferno through the night.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), personnel from the Accra City Fire Station responded to a distress call received at approximately 8:05 p.m. on Wednesday.
The first response team arrived on the scene within two minutes and encountered a fully developed fire. Additional support was subsequently dispatched from the Ministries, Parliament, Industrial Area and Circle fire stations, while the Assembly provided a water tanker to aid firefighting efforts.
Firefighters succeeded in containing the blaze by 10:29 p.m. and brought it under control at 11:50 p.m. The fire was completely extinguished at 3:41 a.m. on Thursday after several hours of intensive operations.
No fatalities were reported.
However, one firefighter sustained critical injuries during the operation and was rushed to the Police Hospital for medical attention. The GNFS indicated that he is currently in stable condition and responding positively to treatment.
The fire caused extensive damage to the Accra Central Police Barracks Annex, destroying 32 rooms and their contents. A one-storey building within the facility was also completely gutted, along with all property housed inside.
Despite the severity of the fire, firefighters successfully prevented it from spreading to nearby facilities belonging to Ghana Water Limited and other adjoining structures, averting what could have been a far more devastating incident.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations have been launched to determine its origin.
