Ghana Grants Visa-Free Entry to All African Nationals

Ghana has announced plans to introduce a visa-free travel policy for all African nationals beginning May 25, 2026, in a move aimed at deepening regional integration and boosting economic activity across the continent.

The policy was unveiled by President John Dramani Mahama and is set to coincide with Africa Day. It is expected to promote tourism, enhance intra-African trade, and reinforce Ghana’s position as a leading advocate of Pan-Africanism.

Under the new system, travelers from African countries will not be required to pay for visas. However, entry will not be automatic. Visitors will still need to complete an online application process for a free e-visa prior to arrival. Authorities say all applicants will undergo standard security screening through Ghana’s immigration systems to ensure safety and compliance.

The initiative aligns with broader continental efforts, particularly the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which seeks to promote the free movement of people, goods, and services across Africa. By implementing this policy, Ghana joins a select group of countries—including Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda, and Seychelles—that already offer visa-free access to all African passport holders.

The announcement builds on earlier efforts to ease travel restrictions. A similar plan had been approved by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in late 2024, with an initial rollout planned for 2025. However, the implementation was delayed to allow for the development of necessary technical systems and security safeguards.

It is important to note that citizens of member states of the Economic Community of West African States already enjoy visa-free access to Ghana under longstanding regional agreements.

Government officials have emphasized that the new digital visa platform will be integrated with international security databases to maintain national safety while making travel more accessible. The policy is expected to mark a significant step forward in Ghana’s efforts to promote unity and economic collaboration across the African continent.
