The Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, has officially called for an emergency session of Parliament to address urgent national matters. The request, made on behalf of the Majority Caucus, invokes Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Standing Order 53 of Ghana’s Parliament, which allow for such a meeting.
Among the issues highlighted are tax exemptions for beneficiaries of the One District, One Factory Programme, the establishment of the Ghana Financial Stability Fund, a $250 million facility from the International Development Association, and the consideration of six key bills. These include the Environmental Protection Agency Bill, 2024, and the Social Protection Bill, 2023.
The request follows Parliament’s adjournment on October 22, 2024, without further explanation, which the Majority Caucus believes requires immediate reconvening to allow the Government to meet its constitutional obligations. The Caucus stressed that the emergency meeting is proposed in good faith, prioritizing national interests.
In the request, the Majority Caucus urges the Speaker of Parliament to summon members within seven days, as required by law, and offers to provide further details or clarification if needed.
