The Akufo-Addo-led government has rolled out the nationwide implementation of the One-Student One-Tablet (1S1T) program in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) schools.

Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has unveiled plans to distribute free tablets to more than 1.4 million students in government Senior High Schools, marking a substantial stride in modernizing education in Ghana. The initiative, set to commence in April, is integral to the Free Senior High School program, aiming to enhance the quality of education in public Second-cycle schools.

Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia underscored the government’s commitment to digital transformation in education during the New Year’s School at the University of Ghana, Legon, preceding this announcement. Dr. Bawumia emphasized that all Senior High School students in the country will soon receive complimentary electronic tablets, serving as valuable teaching tools with preloaded essential textbooks and practice questions.

“This year, we are poised to provide every Senior High School student with tablets containing essential textbooks and preloaded past questions,” Dr. Bawumia stated. He emphasized that the initiative signifies a paradigm shift towards leveraging technology to facilitate learning and empower youth for success in the digital age.

As part of this initiative, 868 tablets have already been distributed to the Sefwi Awaso STEM SHS, aiming to level the educational playing field and enhance opportunities for all students, given the increasing role of technology in the educational system. The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the educational system has experienced significant progress through these efforts.
