Parliament Approves Chief Justice

Parliament has approved Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s nomination as the Chief Justice of Ghana. The Appointments Committee of Parliament unanimously endorsed her nomination after her vetting on May 26, 2023. Following intense deliberations in the House on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, members from both sides engaged in debates before reaching the final decision.

Before the approval, the Minority had already expressed their support for Justice Torkornoo during a press conference held on Tuesday. However, the NDC representatives raised some concerns they hoped she would address as part of her mandate. Specifically, they emphasized the party’s stance on the ruling that removed James Gyakye Quayson as the Assin North MP, a case in which Justice Torkornoo served on the panel.
Haruna Iddrisu, the Tamale South legislator, urged the Chief Justice-nominee to uphold fairness in the administration of justice. He emphasized the importance of carrying out her duties without fear, favor, or political influence while upholding her judicial oath. Mr. Iddrisu also acknowledged Justice Torkornoo’s progression from the High Court to the Court of Appeal. He expressed the Minority’s support for her as the President chose and recognized her.

President Akufo-Addo nominated Justice Torkornoo in April 2023 to succeed Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, who retired on May 24.
