Kwadwo Mpiani, the former chief of staff under President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration, has asserted that President Nana Akufo-Addo bears some responsibility for the challenges confronting the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Mr. Mpiani pointed out that the NPP’s difficulties escalated after the unlawful removal of Paul Afoko, the former national chairman, and Kwabena Agyapong, the former general secretary.

According to Mpiani, the decision to oust these two party leaders was, in his view, unconstitutional within the party’s own rules and regulations. He expressed this view during an interview on Joy News, stating, “Well, to some extent yes. You know, I think the party’s problems deepened the very day the party decided to sack its Chairman [Paul Afoko] and General Secretary [Kwabena Agyapong], which I believe was unconstitutional under our own party rules, but then the party did it.”

He went on to explain that once Afoko and Agyapong were removed from their positions, the party’s management effectively fell into the hands of one individual. Mpiani stated, “Unfortunately, some members, including members of the group to which I belong, take pride in this by saying that they were able to remove these people. As soon as the party removed these people, they gave the party to one man who was the candidate at that time, and who is the President at this time, and this is the problem we have in the party which we are not confronting. And if we don’t confront this problem, we are going to have more problems within the party.”

When directly asked if he meant that President Akufo-Addo was the issue facing the party, Mr. Mpiani responded, “He is part of the problem,” emphasizing that the issue encompasses all party members, including the President himself.
