Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, former Environment Minister, responded to Gabby Otchere Darko’s comments regarding Mr. Otchere-Darko’s interference with his anti-galamsey campaign. In his 36-page document to the President, chief of staff, and police, Prof. Boateng accused Mr. Otchere-Darko and government officials of obstructing his efforts to combat illegal small-scale mining activities. Mr. Otchere-Darko denied the accusation, stating that he did not ask the minister to engage in any illegal activities or condone them.
He claimed he had only contacted him to seek information on his client, a company with mining permits in the country. He further alleged Prof. Frimpong Boateng twisted his intentions to incite public disaffection toward him. However, Prof. Boateng sharply refuted these claims, stating it is laughable how Mr. Gabby Otchere Darko claims he called him to seek information. He further said he does not operate mining information services, and that Mr. Otchere Darko could have called the Minerals Commission for the information.
Prof. Boateng, in his recent response, highlighted that Mr. Otchere-Darko was well aware of the destructive activities of his clients yet chose to use his privileged position to protect them. Prof. Boateng further revealed that Mr. Otchere-Darko had contacted him to assert that his client possessed valid mining licenses and permits, despite Prof. Boateng’s clarification that the company did not have the necessary documents for active mining. Prof. Boateng also accused Mr. Otchere-Darko of intervening to secure the release of Chinese nationals arrested by the task force; and orchestrating attacks by soldiers on the IMCIM task force team, resulting in damage to a vehicle carrying journalists covering IMCIM operations, which was captured on camera and aired on Joy News.
