The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the release of the provisional voter register to political parties in preparation for the upcoming voter register exhibition, set to take place from Tuesday, August 20 to 27, 2024.
This decision follows mounting pressure from political parties and other stakeholders who have been demanding access to the provisional voter register for review.
During a press conference at the EC headquarters on Monday, Deputy Electoral Commissioner Dr. Bossman Asare assured the public that the commission is adhering to its scheduled timeline for distributing the provisional register to political parties.
“We’ve noticed some media reports suggesting that the commission has not provided the provisional voter register to the political parties despite requesting them to bring their external drives. We want to clarify that, according to Regulation 22 of CI 31, as amended by CI 126, the commission is required to distribute the provisional register to the political parties no later than three months after the registration period ends.
“As you may know, the limited registration ended on May 29, 2024, and the mop-up registration concluded on August 3, 2024.”
“Based on the limited registration timeline, the commission has until the end of August 2024 to deliver the provisional register to the political parties. We wish to inform you that the external drives containing the provisional voter register are now available for collection. According to our records, the NDC has already picked up its external drive, and the other parties have also collected theirs,” he stated.
Dr. Asare also confirmed that the voter register exhibition exercise will officially begin on Tuesday, August 20, and run until August 27, 2024.
