In the Eastern Region of Ghana, authorities have launched a manhunt for a man named Danso, who serves as a youth leader and works as a miner in Asamang Tamfoe within the Atewa East District. He is suspected of shooting Major Patrick Don-Chebe, who holds the position of Commanding Officer in the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners Taskforce.

According to information from sources cited by Citi News, the incident occurred on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at a mining site near Asamang Tamfoe. The taskforce had been deployed to address illegal mining activities in the area, acting on intelligence they had received. Danso, accompanied by his associate Joe, who is also involved in mining, arrived at the site.

Joe was seen carrying a firearm as they approached the taskforce. However, the situation took a dramatic turn when members of the taskforce successfully disarmed Joe. At this moment, Danso, who had concealed a pistol beneath his clothing, suddenly produced the weapon and fired at Major Patrick Don-Chebe from close range, striking him in the ribs.

Subsequently, Danso and Joe managed to escape the scene while the taskforce rushed to aid their injured leader. Major Patrick Don-Chebe was swiftly transported to the Kibi government hospital for urgent medical attention. Medical professionals at the hospital later transferred him to the 37 Military Hospital via an ambulance, where he underwent immediate surgery.

Local law enforcement authorities were promptly notified of the incident and managed to apprehend Joe, but Danso remains at large, prompting a police manhunt to locate and detain him.

Godwin Armah, the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, confirmed the incident and urged the Inspector General of Police, George Akufo-Dampare, and the local police to expedite their investigations and bring Danso to justice. Major Patrick Don-Chebe, the Commanding Officer of the Taskforce, continues to receive medical treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
