On Thursday, July 6, the Minority in Parliament showed their support and solidarity for two caucus members by intentionally skipping the house’s meeting.
James Gyakye Quayson, the MP for Assin North, and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, were scheduled to appear in court on the same day because of their ongoing legal cases.
Dr. Ato Forson is being investigated for an alleged financial loss of €2.37 million to the state. The case revolves around the agreement between 2014 and 2016 to purchase 200 ambulances.
James Gyakye Quayson is facing accusations of forgery and perjury before the High Court in Accra. These allegations relate to offenses before the Assin North parliamentary election in 2020.
The Minority expressed their unwavering support for their colleagues through a brief statement and emphasized their solidarity by choosing not to participate in parliamentary proceedings that day.
The Minority in Parliament announced they would abstain from parliamentary activities whenever James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, had a court appearance because of his ongoing criminal prosecution.
Mr. Quayson, who recently won the by-election and was sworn in as an MP on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, is facing significant challenges. In response, the Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, declared that the entire Minority caucus would accompany Mr. Quayson to court and not engage in House business on those days.
This decision serves as a protest against what the Minority perceives as the continued persecution of Mr. Quayson.
Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson stated, “We want to make it known that the entire Minority will accompany our colleague today and on any other days he is required to appear in court. We stand in solidarity with him and will not partake in parliamentary business when he attends court. If the court proceedings occur today, we will leave the Chamber after this ceremony.”
