Following its one-month aggressive revenue mobilization to recover GH¢5.7 billion from its debtor, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has seen some institutions in the Volta Region settle their indebtedness. ECG Officials visited state institutions, hotels, tertiary institutions, and others that owed the company for electricity consumed and even disconnected some of them. Acting General Manager, ECG, Volta Region, Ing. Michael Buabin, stated the response from customers has been positive, and most of them settled all arrears. However, some companies were disconnected from the national grid before making payments.

The Bank of Ghana at Hohoe, for example, settled its indebtedness of GH¢61,902.76 when ECG Officials visited them on 28th March 2023. The Ho nursing training college, which owed GH¢157,000, also settled all their debt. KFC and Melcom were disconnected before paying GH¢103,000 and GH¢55,000, respectively. The Ho Airport and KFC paid more than what they owed ECG, with the Ho Airport paying GH¢100,000 Cedis.

Institutions like Sogakope Beach Resort, Brazil Agro, Sogakope Red Bull Academy, and Regency Salt have settled all their arrears with ECG, while others like the NCA, GCB, Stevens Hotel, and Skyplus Hotel never owed ECG as they always pay their current bills.

Ing. Buabin disclosed that some Municipal and District Assemblies that were disconnected have also paid part of their arrears and are on a payment plan. Institutions such as the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) made part payments. UHAS paid GH¢1.2 million out of GH¢1.4 million owed, and the Ho Technical University paid GH¢200,000 out of GH¢535,000.

According to Ing. Buabin, the company has gathered some GH¢27 million since the exercise began and is poised to achieve its target. He appealed to customers to prioritize the payment of electricity bills to enable ECG to serve them better.
