Eighteen members of Parliament (MPs) affiliated with the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Majority Caucus have unequivocally declared that they will not seek reelection in the upcoming legislative term in 2024.
The voluntary departure of these MPs has sparked discussions and speculation about the NPP’s future in the coming years. Notable figures among them include Kyei Mensah Bonsu (Suame), Joe Osei Owusu (Bekwai), Atta Akyea (Abuakwa South), Joe Ghartey (Essikado Ketan), and Ken Agyapong (Assin Central). These individuals were prominent members of the NPP government, and their exit is expected to leave a notable void in both leadership and parliamentary representation for the party.
Other MPs choosing to step down include Dan Botwe (Okere), Kwasi Amoako-Atta (Atiwa West), Dr. Kwaku Afriyie (Sefwi Wiaso), and Emmanuel Marfo (Oforikrom). Additionally, those opting not to run for reelection include Suleman Sanid (Ahafo Ano North), Kojo Kum (Ahanta West), Francisca Oteng (Kwabre East), Johnson Adu (Ahafo Ano South West), Francis Manu-Adabor (Ahafo Ano South-East), Nana Kwasi Adjei Boateng (New Juabeng North), Benito Owusu-Bio (Atwima Nwabiagya), Suleman Sanid (Ahafo Ano North), Carlos Ahenkora (Tema West), and William Owuraku Aidoo (Afigya Kwabre South).
While the motivations behind the MPs’ decisions remain unknown, speculation suggests reasons such as a desire for respite from the demanding parliamentary life, pursuit of alternative career opportunities, or complete retirement from politics. Internal dynamics or individual considerations within the NPP may also have played a role in influencing the decision-making process.
