South Africa has begun the evacuation of its citizens stranded in Sudan. The operation, which includes the South African Embassy in Sudan staff, is underway. The evacuees are being transported to a neighboring country for their safety, according to foreign ministry spokesman Clayson Monyela.
President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that approximately 77 South Africans were stuck in Sudan. South Africa would assist other nationals from the region stranded in Sudan. The move by South Africa is in line with efforts by other countries worldwide, such as Belgium, Canada, India, the Netherlands, the United States, and France, to evacuate their citizens because of the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The conflict has resulted in shortages of essential resources, such as water, food, medicines, and fuel. Some of these evacuation operations occur via Port Sudan on the Red Sea, located approximately 650km (400 miles) northeast of Khartoum or nearly 800km (500 miles) by road.
