Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, has strongly criticized Speaker Alban Bagbin for suspending four MPs following the chaotic vetting session on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
According to Osei Nyarko, it was procedurally wrong for the Speaker to unilaterally suspend lawmakers—including three from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and three from the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—without following established parliamentary processes.
He argued that any disciplinary action against an MP should go through the Privileges or Special Committee, which would investigate the matter, allow the accused MP to respond, and then present a report to the House for a decision before the Speaker takes action.
“If any MP does anything wrong, their conduct is referred to the Privileges or Special Committee for investigation. The committee will grant the MP an opportunity to respond before writing its report. The Speaker can only act after the House adopts the committee’s recommendations,” Osei Nyarko wrote on his official Facebook page.
He insisted that the Speaker overstepped his authority, stressing that all parliamentary rules and constitutional provisions outline a clear process before any punitive measures can be imposed.
Osei Nyarko firmly opposed Speaker Bagbin’s decision, arguing that it lacked constitutional and procedural backing.
