Stevie Wonder granted Ghanaian citizenship

At a ceremony held at the Jubilee House in Accra, the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, granted Ghanaian citizenship to the renowned American Musician and Songwriter, Steveland Morris, widely known as Stevie Wonder.

This event signifies a remarkable milestone in Ghana’s endeavors to attract Africans from the diaspora and acknowledge remarkable contributions to the African diaspora.

 

President Akufo-Addo commended Stevie Wonder for his exceptional contributions to music and his unwavering commitment to the African diaspora. He highlighted how Stevie Wonder’s music has inspired generations of Ghanaians and Africans globally, and noted that his visit to Ghana would bolster the bonds between Africa and its diaspora.

 

The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Henry Quartey, also lauded the President for spearheading the Year of Return initiative, which has resulted in the registration of 252 individuals from African-American and Caribbean Diasporan Communities as Ghanaians.

Stevie Wonder, a longtime admirer of Ghana and its rich cultural heritage, expressed profound gratitude, joy, and honor for being bestowed with Ghanaian citizenship. He spoke of his attraction to Ghana’s vibrant culture and warm hospitality, stating his excitement in officially becoming a Ghanaian citizen.

 

This ceremony marked a significant moment in Ghana’s engagement with its diaspora counterparts and acknowledgment of their exceptional contributions to the African diaspora. It is anticipated to stimulate further collaboration and exchange between Ghana and the African diaspora, solidifying Ghana’s status as a center for African cultural and intellectual excellence.
