The government has announced the termination of the mining leases of FGR Bogoso Prestea Mining Limited, based on recommendations from the Minerals Commission and the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice.

This decision was communicated in a statement signed by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

FGR had been cautioned in August 2023 regarding breaches in its mining operations and was advised by the Minerals Commission to address them.

According to the statement, “the decision to terminate the mining leases was made after reviewing reports from the Minerals Commission, a Ministerial Committee set up to evaluate the company’s operations, and after extensive discussions with all stakeholders involved.”

The termination follows widespread protests and concerns raised by various groups, including the Ghana Mine Workers Union. Over 400 union members had picketed at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, demanding the cancellation of FGR Bogoso Prestea’s mining leases due to poor working conditions and the company’s failure to meet critical operational and debt obligations.

Minister Jinapor assured the public of the government’s continued commitment to the efficient, effective, and sustainable management of the country’s natural resources, emphasizing transparency, integrity, and the best interests of the Ghanaian people.
