Shou Zi Chew, TikTok’s CEO, will testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on March 23 about the app’s security and privacy practices. The panel’s chair also announced that he would discuss the company’s ties to China through its parent company, ByteDance.
The announcement comes as talks between the U.S. government and the company have dragged on for several weeks.
This issue has been raised by both sides of the aisle, with lawmakers passing a year-end legislative package banning TikTok on government devices.
A spokesperson for TikTok said they welcome the opportunity to set the record straight about TikTok and its affiliate company. They also mentioned the commitments they are making to address concerns about U.S. national security before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
Representative McMorris Rodgers’ claim that TikTok has provided the Chinese Communist Party with U.S. user data is untrue, according to the spokesperson. ByteDance and TikTok are neither directly nor indirectly controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.
He furthermore said, their proposal with their national security agencies, through CFIUS, prevents any foreign influence over TikTok in the United States.
