Training in French for the hospitality industry

In a bid to bolster Ghana’s reputation as a welcoming travel destination within the sub-region, the government has initiated a comprehensive language training program, enrolling approximately 2,000 members of the country’s hospitality industry in French.

This initiative, a vital component of the government’s Ghana Cares Economic Transformation program, aims to enhance effective communication and provide exceptional, personalized services to Francophone guests, thus reaffirming Ghana’s dedication to fostering a diverse and culturally aware tourism sector.

On Sunday, September 24, 2023, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, addressed the press in Accra, stating, “The majority of tourists visiting Ghana’s attractions come from French-speaking countries.”

As such, the language training program has been thoughtfully designed to equip front-line staff across the tourism industry with bilingual proficiency, enabling them to interact effectively and cater to the unique needs of visitors, particularly those from French-speaking nations.

Dr. Awal emphasized that the training program has been meticulously structured and divided into several phases. The initial phase, which began last month and will continue until December 2023, involves a select group of 100 employees from upscale hotels in Accra. This phase serves as a pilot program to ensure thorough training and assessment before a broader implementation.

Furthermore, Dr. Awal underscored that the government’s vision extends beyond this initial stage. He stressed that the ultimate objective is to train 2,000 hospitality staff members, aligning with the government’s overarching mission of making Ghana an even more appealing travel destination for a diverse range of tourists.

He assured Ghanaians of the government’s unwavering commitment to expanding service quality and developing tourist hubs within the country. He stated that investments in skill development are essential for the long-term growth and prosperity of the tourism sector.
