Transparency in Election Management

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, emphasized that political parties should refrain from criticizing the election management body when election outcomes are unfavorable, citing the recent by-elections in the Kumawu and Assin North constituencies as examples.

According to Mrs. Mensa, these by-elections showcased the transparency, robustness, and integrity inherent in the systems implemented by the commission for the 2020 elections.
During an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, Mrs. Mensa stated that while it may not be possible to scrutinize the systems during general elections, it is crucial to focus on individual polling stations and acknowledge the efforts of the EC.

She dismissed allegations of manipulating figures at the EC headquarters to favor certain parties, asserting that the credibility and transparency of the elections were evident to all, including party agents.

Mrs. Mensa highlighted the orderly conduct of the Kumawu and Assin North polls, emphasizing that all polling stations opened early, manned by competent and well-trained staff. Using robust verification equipment, such as the Biometric Verification Devices (BVD), ensured swift and efficient voter verification, eliminating long queues.

By 1 p.m. on the voting day, a significant turnout of around 60 percent had been recorded in most polling stations, and the collation processes were conducted openly, transparently, and promptly. Mrs. Mensa described the process as credible, fair, and transparent, as it was conducted in full view of the public and observers.

Since the process was transparent and credible, the president urged stakeholders to accept election results gracefully and not criticize the elections management body. Winning parties should celebrate their victory fairly while losing parties should accept defeat in the same spirit.
