The Trade Union Congress (TUC) is actively seeking a legal interpretation of the current legislation that prohibits security agencies from establishing labor unions.
The TUC finds it perplexing that while the Labour Act permits all other workers to become part of a union to safeguard their rights and interests, security forces are denied this fundamental right.
During a public forum, Dr. Yaw Baah, the Secretary-General of TUC, revealed that the organization has instructed its legal team to pursue this matter through legal channels.
“The TUC is initiating legal action on several fronts. The initial section of Act 651, which outlines the boundaries of the law, places certain restrictions on specific organizations. Notably, Immigration officers, prison officers, and the police are explicitly barred from joining or forming unions to protect their interests. We have already instructed our legal counsel to take this issue to court,” he declared.
