In the 2023 edition of the Global 2000 list by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), the University of Ghana has been recognized as the best university in Ghana and the second-best in West Africa. This prestigious ranking solidifies the university’s position as the leading institution in Ghana and highlights its exceptional standing in West Africa.

The CWUR rigorously evaluated 20,531 universities worldwide, selecting only the top 2000 for the Global 2000 list. The rankings were determined based on seven objective indicators: education quality, alumni employment, faculty quality, and research performance.

With an impressive score of 69.1, the University of Ghana secured the top spot in Ghana. The university’s remarkable performance in the West Africa region positioned it as the second-best university, trailing closely behind Nigeria’s University of Ibadan, which scored 69.5. This noteworthy accomplishment coincides with the university’s 75th Anniversary, highlighting its unwavering dedication to academic excellence, innovative research, and holistic student development throughout its 75 years.

The university’s outstanding performance in critical areas such as academic reputation, research output, faculty quality, international collaborations, and graduate employability solidifies its reputation as a hub of intellectual activity and a provider of high-quality education.

Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, expressed her joy and attributed this success to the resilience, dedication, and hard work of the faculty, staff, and students. She emphasized that this achievement reflects the university’s commitment to excellence and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.

Being recognized as the leading institution in the country and the second-best in West Africa is a source of immense pride for the nation, as the University of Ghana has long been regarded as a beacon of higher education. The university has played a pivotal role in nurturing generations of leaders, scholars, and professionals who contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of Ghana and beyond.

With this remarkable milestone, the University of Ghana firmly establishes itself as a leading force in academia, setting new benchmarks for higher education in Ghana and the entirety of West Africa.

The ranking project began in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to rate the top 100 world universities. Because of its global recognition and the demand for expansion, the ranking was expanded in 2019 to include the top 2000 universities out of nearly twenty thousand worldwide, making it the most significant academic ranking of global universities. The 2023 ranking edition is based on CWUR’s seven aims and robust indicators grouped into four areas to evaluate universities worldwide.
