In the first nine months of 2023, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has experienced an uptick in its losses. The company reported collection losses amounting to GH¢2,050,373,143.47 as of September 2023, representing income not received due to non-payment, delinquency, or bad debt from tenants or customers.
In comparison, the total loss recorded in 2022 stood at GH¢2,448,770,084.34, as disclosed by Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh during an update on the country’s power situation in Accra on Thursday.
Dr. Prempeh provided a breakdown of the losses, indicating that for system losses, the ECG incurred GH¢4,038,241,812.63 in the first nine months of 2023, compared to GH¢2,599,695,242.10 in 2022. Additionally, technical losses amounted to GH¢1,279,369,021.42 as of September 2023, in contrast to GH¢2,758,872,792.21 in 2022.
Addressing commercial losses, the Energy Minister highlighted that the ECG reported a loss of GH¢2,758,872,791.21 in the same period of 2023, as opposed to GH¢1,852,597,985.96 recorded in 2022.
