On Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in Ghana to begin a weeklong visit to Africa aimed at strengthening US relationships with the continent amidst global competition over its future.

The Vice President was welcomed by schoolchildren, dancers, and drummers as she stepped off her plane after an overnight flight. In her remarks, she highlighted the importance of the longstanding relationship and friendship between the two continents.

Ghana is facing severe economic and security challenges, including a debt crisis, inflation, and threats from instability in the region. These issues will be discussed when Harris meets with Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo, on Monday.

During Harris’ trip, she hopes to promote economic growth, food security, witness innovation and creativity on the continent, as well as China’s influence, which has become entrenched through infrastructure projects, lending, and expanding telecommunications networks in recent years.

Most of Harris’ events in Ghana will focus on young people, with plans to visit a skate park, co-working space, and Cape Coast Castle, where enslaved Africans were once loaded onto ships bound for America.
