Dr. Gideon Boako, the spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed the claims circulating on social media that Dr. Bawumia possesses British citizenship while serving as Vice President of Ghana. In a Facebook post on Friday evening, Dr. Gideon Boako stated that Dr. Bawumia has never held British or any other citizenship throughout his life.
These assertions came in response to a screenshot shared on social media, allegedly containing information about the Vice President from a supposed UK website. The screenshot claimed Dr. Bawumia holds British citizenship, which, if true, would violate Ghanaian laws that prohibit individuals with dual citizenship from holding certain positions, including Vice President.
However, Dr. Bawumia’s spokesperson firmly dismissed the claims on Facebook, advising against crediting the allegations and treating them with contempt. Dr. Boako wrote, “The Office of the Vice President has been made aware of a malicious allegation circulating on social media, suggesting that the Vice President holds British citizenship while serving in office, contrary to Ghanaian laws.”
“We want to make it unequivocally clear that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is not a British citizen and has never held British or any other citizenship apart from being a Ghanaian. The allegation should be disregarded as baseless. Thank you.”
