Speaker Alban Bagbin has introduced a University of Development Studies (UDS) Research Fund amounting to $100,000, intended to offer financial support through grants to qualified individuals, including faculty, staff, and students. The purpose of these grants is to facilitate relevant research with an emphasis on applied, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary approaches for the socioeconomic development of northern Ghana and beyond.
In a gesture of support, Speaker Bagbin personally contributed GH¢50,000 as initial funding for the research fund. During the 8th Harmattan School of the UDS in Tamale, where he served as the guest of honour, Speaker Bagbin addressed the theme, “Accountable governance, violent extremism, and the 2024 elections.”
He urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure the 2024 elections are conducted with integrity, transparency, and trust. Emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the will and safety of voters and the stability of the country, Speaker Bagbin urged the EC Commissioners and staff to consider the sanctity of the electoral process and the protection of political parties.
Reflecting on the theme, he noted that the current circumstances, especially events in the sub-region, make it highly relevant. Speaker Bagbin highlighted the prevalence of military coup d’états and extremism in sub-Saharan Africa over the past three years, emphasizing the need for thoughtful reflection to understand the underlying causes.
Addressing the global implications of violent extremism in today’s geopolitics, he underscored its linkage with terrorism and the significant threat it poses to global security. Speaker Bagbin cautioned the media to exercise responsibility in shaping public opinion about the fairness of electoral processes, urging them to refrain from prematurely declaring election results.
Additionally, he advised political parties and their communicators to avoid indecent and abusive language on air, calling for leadership to promote tolerance and respect during the election period. The Speaker urged the EC to work towards transparency in its processes and maintain integrity in voter registration to foster public trust.
