The commencement of the IBSA Goalball African Championship 2023 took place in Cairo, Egypt, on Sunday, December 10, with confirmation of participation from four countries: Egypt, Ghana, Algeria, and Coté D’Ivoire.
The opening ceremony unfolded at the Dr. Hassan Mostafa Sports Halls, formerly recognized as the 6th of October City Arena, at 5:30 pm Egypt time. Notable figures from the International Blind Sports community, including Dr. Ahmed Ewen and Aurora Zanolin, were in attendance. The President of the Egyptian Blind Sports Association and a Board member of the Africa Paralympic Committee, Dr. Ahmed Ewen, graced the event with his presence.
The Chairperson of the IBSA Goalball Sub-committee, John Potts, and the Secretary of the IBSA Goalball Sub-committee, along with the Sports Minister of Egypt, Ashraf Sobhy, connected via Zoom to share their remarks. In the first match of the tournament, the host country, Egypt, secured a victory against Coté D’Ivoire, who exclusively represented their men’s team, with a scoreline of 11-1.
As the championship progresses, Matchday 2 is scheduled for Monday, December 11, 2023, featuring Ghana’s male and female teams in games 3 and 4, respectively.
