Buhari’s mistakes Tinubu must avoid — Nigerians

Capture

During the last presidential elections, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu pledged to follow in the footsteps of President Muhammadu Buhari. However, this pledge made them the subject of jokes by the former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike. Tinubu has now assumed office as the President of Nigeria, and there are calls for him to avoid the mistakes made by his predecessor.

Eminent Nigerians have advised President Tinubu to prioritize merit, equity, and geopolitical spread in his appointments rather than tribal sentiments. They also urge him to understand the economy well, avoid policy somersaults, and refrain from excessive borrowing and money printing, which devalues the currency and raises inflation. Tinubu is encouraged to genuinely fight against corruption, respect the rule of law, and ensure government compliance with court orders.

Tinubu’s intervention in the recent face-off between the EFCC and the DSS is commended, contrasting with Buhari’s lack of action. While Tinubu is encouraged to continue infrastructure development, he is warned against emulating Buhari’s approach to security, corruption, and economic policies. He is advised to be impartial in the fight against insecurity and to prioritize investment promotion by creating a conducive environment for investors.

Opinions vary on whether Tinubu should follow in Buhari’s footsteps. Some believe he will have his strategy and agenda, focusing on decentralizing the government, fighting corruption, and improving the economy. Others argue that Buhari’s governance was characterized by failures in various sectors, including the economy, security, education, and poverty alleviation. They caution against emulating Buhari’s policies, emphasizing the need for Tinubu to relaunch Nigeria and position it for growth.

Tinubu’s cosmopolitan background is highlighted as a factor that could shape his policies and worldview. Tinubu should invest more in infrastructure, involve the private sector in financing, and prioritize human capital development. However, he should differentiate himself from Buhari in economic management and security, with zero tolerance for kidnapping and ensuring the safety of school children and travelers.
