Albert Kan-Dapaah, the Minister for National Security, has voiced grave concern regarding the escalating incidents of chieftaincy disputes and landguard activities, characterizing them as formidable threats to Ghana’s democratic stability.
Kan-Dapaah’s unease follows the tragic demise of Lance Corporal Michael Danso during a land ownership conflict at Millenium City in Gomoa East.
The Minister believes that chieftaincy disputes, in particular, present an enduring challenge to internal security and necessitate immediate and resolute action.
Addressing attendees at the 2024 Civil Service Week and 2023 Awards Ceremony in Accra, he stressed the imperative of sustained endeavors to effectively tackle these issues to prevent future occurrences. “It must be emphasized that chieftaincy disputes, in particular, persist as a significant internal security concern demanding lasting solutions. It is noteworthy that chieftaincy disputes comprise a substantial portion of the daily situational reports received by my ministry.
“The potential for such disputes to escalate into violent clashes compels us to continually allocate substantial resources to mitigate these threats. These resources could otherwise be allocated to more productive sectors of the economy.”
