The government has provided assurance that the Doli bridge, which suffered damage due to heavy rainfall on September 17, 2023, will undergo temporary repairs and be made usable within the coming week. This commitment was made by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako-Attah, during his inspection of the bridge on September 19, 2023. The Doli bridge is a crucial link connecting the Upper West Region to the southern regions of Ghana, and its destruction has disrupted transportation.
Amoako-Attah revealed that a contractor is already at the site and has been instructed to work around the clock to expedite the temporary solution. He stated, “I have directed the contractor to operate continuously, day and night, and work has already commenced. We have a fleet of up to 20 trucks on-site, demonstrating our commitment to swift action.”
He further outlined the plan, saying, “Within a week, we expect to establish a temporary route for vehicle passage. In the subsequent weeks, permanent reconstruction work will commence, ensuring the restoration of the road to its original state, complete with a sturdy bridge.”
Amoako-Attah also made an appeal to the transportation community, particularly drivers who have reportedly increased fares by 40% due to the detour required through Sawla-Fufulso and Buipe-Techiman highways. He emphasized, “I urge our drivers and transport unions to exercise understanding in this situation. I am aware that fares have risen significantly due to the extended travel routes caused by this unfortunate incident. However, it’s essential to recognize that this is a natural disaster beyond anyone’s control.”
He continued, “While the people are enduring hardships and inconveniences, we must all show compassion and solidarity. This challenge has arisen from an act of nature, and together, we must address it. We should be each other’s support during these trying times.”
